Getting to Koh Samui is slightly different from reaching most of Thailand’s major holiday destinations. The island has its own airport, but it is privately owned and operates quite differently from the large airports in Bangkok, Phuket or Chiang Mai. For many travellers, that makes flying to Koh Samui with Bangkok Airways the simplest way to arrive.
Bangkok Airways has long been closely associated with Samui. It operates a substantial part of the island’s air network and describes itself as “Asia’s Boutique Airline” rather than a low-cost carrier. That distinction matters when comparing fares: tickets to Samui can look expensive beside budget flights to mainland airports, but the experience and, more importantly, the convenience are not directly comparable.
Why flying directly to Koh Samui makes sense
Samui Airport’s code is USM, and it sits in the north-east of the island, conveniently placed for Chaweng, Choeng Mon, Bangrak and Bophut. Once you land, you are already on Samui. There is no ferry connection, long-distance bus or additional mainland transfer to organise.
That sounds obvious, but it is the main point to consider when comparing prices. A cheaper flight to Surat Thani on the mainland can be a perfectly sensible option, particularly for travellers watching their budget. However, the complete journey then involves getting from the airport to the ferry terminal, crossing to Samui and travelling from the island pier to your accommodation.
If time on the island matters more than shaving every possible baht from the journey, flying directly into USM is difficult to beat.
Bangkok Airways and Samui
Bangkok Airways is one of the main airlines connecting Koh Samui with Bangkok and other destinations in Thailand and Asia. Bangkok–Samui is the route most visitors encounter, particularly when arriving in Thailand on an international flight and connecting through Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport.
The airline also operates direct services between Samui and other destinations, with routes varying according to schedules and demand. These have included Phuket, Chiang Mai, Krabi and U-Tapao domestically, alongside international services such as Singapore and Hong Kong. Flight schedules change, so it is worth checking the current timetable rather than assuming a route operates every day or throughout the year.
Bangkok Airways also has codeshare and through-ticketing relationships with numerous international airlines. This can be particularly useful when travelling from Europe, Australia or elsewhere in Asia. Where available, booking the international journey and the final flight to Samui on one ticket can make the connection considerably easier and may provide better protection if an earlier flight is delayed.
What does “Boutique Airline” actually mean?
The “boutique” description is Bangkok Airways’ own positioning, but there are practical differences between it and the typical low-cost airline model.
Economy fares generally include checked baggage, and passengers receive food or refreshments during the flight. At selected airports, eligible passengers can also use Bangkok Airways’ Boutique Lounges, with complimentary snacks, drinks and Wi-Fi. None of this makes a short flight from Bangkok luxurious in the traditional sense. What it does mean is that the fare should be compared with the total cost of a low-cost alternative after baggage, transfers and other extras have been added.
Flying from Bangkok to Koh Samui
For most international visitors, the easiest route is Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) to Koh Samui (USM). Bangkok Airways operates multiple services on the route, although exact frequencies vary.
The biggest advantage is straightforward connectivity. If your long-haul flight arrives at Suvarnabhumi and your Samui flight also departs from there, you avoid transferring across Bangkok to Don Mueang Airport, which is used by many Thai low-cost services.
When booking separate tickets, leave a sensible connection time. Immigration queues, baggage collection and delayed incoming flights can quickly turn an apparently generous connection into a stressful one. A slightly later Samui flight is often preferable to constructing an itinerary that only works if everything runs perfectly.
Arriving at Samui Airport
Samui Airport is one of the more unusual airports in Thailand. Much of the passenger area is open-sided, with landscaped grounds and low-rise buildings rather than the enclosed terminal environment found at larger airports.
Arriving passengers are commonly transported from the aircraft towards the terminal area on distinctive open-sided airport trams. It is a small detail, but it immediately makes the arrival feel very different from stepping into another anonymous terminal building.
The airport is also compact. Baggage reclaim, onward transport and the exits are relatively easy to navigate, and you can be on your way to your hotel or villa surprisingly quickly when the airport is not particularly busy.
Is Bangkok Airways expensive?
It can be. Samui airfares are frequently higher than flights of a similar duration elsewhere in Thailand, and travellers accustomed to very cheap domestic fares can be surprised by the difference.
Prices also move considerably according to travel dates, demand and how far ahead you book. Christmas and New Year, popular school-holiday periods and other busy dates are not the time to assume that a cheap last-minute seat will appear.
The useful comparison is not simply “Bangkok to Samui” against “Bangkok to Surat Thani”. Compare the complete journey: flight, baggage, airport transfers, ferry tickets, travel time and the final transfer to your accommodation. For a solo traveller with plenty of time, the mainland route can still save worthwhile money. For a family, a short trip or anyone arriving after a long international flight, paying more to land directly on Samui can be money well spent.
Cheaper ways to get to Koh Samui
Flying directly is not the only option. Budget airlines serve Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat on the mainland, from where combined bus and ferry journeys can take you onwards to Samui. Travelling south from Bangkok by overnight train and continuing by bus and ferry is another possibility.
These routes have their place. They are particularly useful for longer trips where saving money matters more than saving several hours. They can also be part of the experience for travellers moving slowly through southern Thailand rather than simply trying to reach Samui as efficiently as possible.
Just pay attention to the complete timetable. A flight arriving on the mainland late in the day is much less useful if it misses the ferry connection you intended to catch.
Tips for flying to Koh Samui with Bangkok Airways
- Search early for busy dates. Samui flights can become noticeably more expensive as popular travel periods fill.
- Compare complete journey costs. Include baggage, buses, ferries and transfers before deciding the mainland route is cheaper.
- Check whether you can through-ticket. An international itinerary connecting directly onto Samui can be much easier than managing separate bookings.
- Allow enough connection time. This is especially important if your flights are on separate tickets.
- Check your exact fare conditions. Baggage allowances and rules for changing tickets depend on the fare purchased.
- Check current routes before planning around them. Domestic and international Samui schedules can change seasonally.
The easiest way to start a Samui trip
There are cheaper ways of reaching the island, but few are easier than flying to Koh Samui with Bangkok Airways. From Bangkok, the journey removes the buses, piers and ferry connections involved in approaching Samui from the mainland and puts you directly on the island.
For travellers with more time than money, flying to Surat Thani and taking the ferry remains worth considering. But if you value a straightforward journey, particularly after an international flight, the direct arrival at USM often justifies the higher fare.
