Thailand has a new reason to celebrate after 16-year-old guitarist Nene Royal won America’s Got Talent 2026. For us at Samui Unlocked, though, there’s something particularly satisfying about seeing her win. We’ve been following Nene Royal for the past two years, watching her perform at the markets in Phuket long before she appeared on an American television stage.
So when Nene first appeared on America’s Got Talent, there was a genuine moment of recognition in the Samui Unlocked office.
We knew her.
Not personally, but as the remarkably talented young guitarist we’d been watching perform on the Phuket market circuit. Seeing her suddenly turn up on AGT was a surprise. Seeing how well she handled the opportunity wasn’t.
We’d Been Watching Nene Royal in Phuket for Two Years
There’s an important part of Nene’s story that viewers discovering her through America’s Got Talent wouldn’t necessarily know.
She has been putting the work in for years.
We first came across Nene through her performances in Phuket and have followed her progress for around two years. Long before the television production, the big audience and the international attention, she was out there playing.
That matters.
Market performances may not have the glamour of a major television show, but they are a very real place to learn your craft. There’s no guaranteed attentive audience. People are eating, shopping, talking and walking past. A performer has to earn their attention.
You also have to keep turning up.
That’s one of the things we’ve admired about Nene. Behind the obvious natural ability is the less glamorous part of becoming a good musician: practice, repetition, performing regularly and gradually becoming more confident in what you do.
Then Nene Appeared on America’s Got Talent
When she appeared on Season 21 of America’s Got Talent, it was one of those slightly surreal moments when someone you recognise from a very local setting suddenly appears somewhere completely unexpected.
Her audition brought Nene to a much wider audience, but she didn’t look like someone overwhelmed by the occasion. The experience gained from all those previous performances showed.
She continued through the competition, including receiving Mel B’s Golden Buzzer for her performance of Soundgarden’s Black Hole Sun, and eventually made it all the way to the final.
Then she won.
From Phuket’s Markets to AGT Winner
At just 16 years old, Nene Royal became the winner of America’s Got Talent Season 21 and the first Thai act to win the competition.
It is a remarkable achievement in its own right, but knowing something about where she has come from makes it even better to see.
There will inevitably be people who discover Nene now and see a teenager who seemingly appeared from nowhere and won one of America’s biggest television talent competitions.
We see it slightly differently.
We see the young musician who was already performing in Phuket when there were no television cameras around. Someone who kept practising, kept playing and kept improving.
AGT gave her an extraordinary opportunity and an enormous audience. Nene was ready when that opportunity arrived.
Congratulations, Nene
Thailand produces plenty of talented young musicians, but very few will ever get an opportunity on the scale of America’s Got Talent. Fewer still will go on to win it.
For those of us who have been following Nene Royal since her days performing around Phuket, it has been a genuine pleasure watching that progression.
So this is simply a well-earned congratulations from Samui Unlocked.
Congratulations, Nene Royal, on winning America’s Got Talent 2026.
Not only for what happened on the AGT stage, but for the work, commitment and countless performances that came before it.
We’ll certainly be watching to see where she goes next.
