Spain have done it!!!!
After a tense World Cup final that refused to produce a goal during normal time, Spain finally broke Argentina’s resistance in extra time to claim a 1-0 victory and lift the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
It was not the wild, end-to-end spectacle many had expected from two of the tournament’s strongest sides. Instead, the final became a battle of patience, discipline and nerves, with Spain controlling much of the play while Argentina worked tirelessly to keep them out.
For 90 minutes, the scoreboard refused to move.
Spain kept pushing, Argentina kept defending, and every chance carried the weight of an entire tournament. As the match moved into extra time, it felt increasingly likely that the World Cup might be decided from the penalty spot.
Then Ferran Torres changed everything.
The substitute struck in the 106th minute, finally finding a way through the Argentine defence and giving Spain the goal they had spent most of the night chasing.
Argentina tried to respond, but Spain held firm through the closing stages and saw out the victory to become world champions for the second time.
It was a fitting end to an outstanding tournament from Spain. They moved through the knockout rounds with victories over Austria, Portugal, Belgium and France before overcoming Argentina in the final.
They did not always make it look easy, but they consistently found a way through. Against Argentina, one goal was all they needed.
For Argentina, the defeat brings a painful end to another remarkable World Cup run. They had fought their way past Cape Verde, Egypt, Switzerland and England to reach the final, but could not find the goal needed to defend their title.
And with that, the 2026 World Cup is complete.
England finished third after their ten-goal shootout with France, Argentina take second place, and Spain leave North America with the trophy.
After weeks of late nights, dramatic finishes, surprise exits and far too many confident predictions, Spain are the last team standing.
Spain are the champions of the world!
